Kilauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 as a beacon for traveling ships. It is the northernmost point of the Hawaiian Islands. In 1985 it was established as Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.
I have visited the lighthouse several times since 1970. It wasn’t until sometime around 2011 that a gift shop was built and a fence was put around the lighthouse.
Kilauea Town has several places to shop & eat: Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza, Lighthouse Bistro. Island Soap and Candle Works is a great shop to buy little gifts to take home. There is always fresh fish on the menu at the Fish Market.
Christ Memorial Episcopal Church is located just after you enter Kilauea from Kuhio Hwy. It was constructed from cut lava in 1941. The church used stained glass windows imported from England, and the adjacent graveyard has graves dating to the 1800s. It is absolutely gorgeous.
